About Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are exfoliants that help to shed the outer layer of the epidermis, and work their way to the deeper layers of the skin. Great for treating fine lines, wrinkles and evening out the texture and tone of skin.

Referred to as fruit acids, they include glycolic, lactic, malic, citric, tarctic and pyruvic acids. The two most popular are lactic and glycolic. Glycolic acid is the smallest of all alpha hydroxy acids and therefore more easily penetrates deeper into the skins surface

Normally dead cells flake off to make room for the living cells that are constantly rising to the skins surface. This usually takes 28-30 days, but age and the environment can dramatically slow down this process. Glycolic acid can speed up the exfoliation process by dissolving the cellular "cement" that binds dead cells together.

Glycolic acid has been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lighten dark spots and smooth the texture of the skin. They also help to open clogged pores.

In our online store, we carry two glycolic lines, Neostrata and Vivite Both are available in cream form and lotions. Generally creams are for normal/combination skin, and lotions are for oily skin.

We also have the neostrata PHA (polyhydroxy) line. This is a larger molecule and penetrates more slowly. It is less irritating to rosacea patients.
